All applicants are assessed according to a selection system based on education, experience, age, adaptability, knowledge of english and french. After reviewing the candidate's application, an immigration officer will decide if an interview is necessary. The purpose of the interview is to determine the candidates' personal suitability for immigration to Canada, as well as their occupational expertise and professional qualifications. The immigration officer may ask questions related to work experience, education, etc. Questions are intended to evaluate a candidate's ability to settle successfully in Canada.

All candidates and their dependents must pass a medical examination to ensure they are in good health. A security check will also be performed to ensure candidates do not have a criminal record. The entire procedure can take between 14 and 40 months, depending on which immigration office processes the file.

When the candidate is married, either the candidate or his/her spouse may apply as the principal applicant. All unmarried children 22 years of age and under are accepted with their parents.

Children over the age of 22 can be included in the application only if they are unmarried and have been continuously enrolled and in attendance as full-time students in an educational institution and financially supported by their parents since turning 22. Also, they can be included if they are unable to support themselves due to a medical condition and are financially supported by their parents.
